Self protection

One of the many reasons that I moved to Maine back in the 1970s was because I just did not feel safe living in Northern Virginia anymore. Within a short period of time I was exposed to two different rape attempts (on me) and it scared me pretty badly. I was lucky to have been able to bluff my way out of the first attempt by threatening to hit the would-be rapist with a large bottle that I was carrying at the time.   Then I responded after that to the first rape attempt by taking karate classes for self protection. I responded to the second rape attempt threatening to beat up the attacker using my karate skills, and that frightened him off.  Then I went out and bought a dog.

But I still didn’t feel safe, and I did not want to buy a gun. I had heard so many horror stories about how young children have been killed by guns left carelessly around the house, and more stories about how sometimes an intruder could find the gun and then use it against the inhabitants, and then even more stories about how a burglar might overtake the victim before the victim can shoot and then use the gun against the victim. All in all, I didn’t feel that guns were the best choice for me. As the neighborhood I lived in became less desirable I felt less safe and moved to Maine to get away from the feelings of vulnerability that I was having living in Northern Virginia.

But that was many years ago, before great things were developed to help people defend themselves without being lethal. If I were going to buy myself a self-defense product right now, I think that I’d buy some mace or a M18L taser gun, or maybe both!

It looks like I made a good decision

When I decided to sign up for the Pharmacy Technician Course, it was because I needed a job close to home.  Doing a little bit of research, I found that there is a shortage of Pharmacy Technicians.  There are pharmacies everywhere!  And many of them need technicians!  I have been running errands a little bit lately and talked with some pharmacists, many of them say that they expect to be hiring more pharmacy technicians within the next few months.  And they all say that there is a serious shortage of them.  So, I think that maybe I made the right choice in taking the class!  Now I just hope I pass it, and the certification exam!

My son will probably get a frequent flier credit card

My youngest son finds himself doing a lot of traveling now that he’s out of the public school system.  I’ve suggested that he get an Airline Miles Credit Card.  I’ve emailed him the link to the airlinecreditcardrewards.com website so he can use their reviews to help pick out the best one for him to order.

D was driving me crazy today

There’s a guy in class that I’ll call “D” to protect his privacy.  I swear he has adult ADHD and it seems to be out of control in class.  I know what ADHD is, my oldest son has it.  But this guy is a lot worse than my son is!  He seems to be in his early 20s and he just cannot sit still.  He is always using his pencil to drum on the table, or rocking his chair back and forth, or banging his head on the table or getting up and walking around the room.  Today he was worse than usual and he was very disruptive.  I’m surprised that they teacher did not ask him to settle down.  He was driving me CRAZY!

Pharmacy Tech Classes

My Pharmacy Tech Classes are going quite well so far.  I’ve gotten “As” on all of the tests and homework assignments.  I’ve completed the research paper, which isn’t due for another month.  I’ve even been interviewing for work in the local Wal-Mart store for a job as a Pharmacy Technician, and they say that they are very interested in hiring me.  I’m supposed to call them back tomorrow afternoon and see what kind of progress is being made to that end.  I hope I got the job!  We sure could use the money since my hubby lost seven months of pay from being out injured from that car accident he was in last fall.

I’ve been doing some research as to how much money Pharmacy Techs make and to be honest it was not as much as I thought it was when I signed up for the class.  I’m not sure if I would have signed up for the class if I’d realized how little they actually get paid.  It seems to be for a job to require certification and continuing education that companies would pay decent money!  But it seems that in this area where I live getting paid decent money is a pipe dream, which is why most people commute an hour or more to go to work.  And I don’t want to drive that far to go to work, so I have to just swallow my pride and take a lower paying job.

Oh well, I need the money and the job is close to home.  With the price of gas going up as much as it has, and as much as it is going to be going up, I’ll be the lucky one bringing home more money at the end of the week once the costs of commuting are figured into the picture!
