Legal Aid

One of the worst things to happen at night is for the house phone to ring. A phone call in the middle of the night is never an announcement of any type of good news. Last night was no different when my sister-in-law called the house at 2:30am. Of course she and my brother live in California, which is four time zones away so it was only 10:30pm for them but still late to be calling anyone as far as I’m concerned, unless it’s an emergency and last night was such an emergency, sort of.

It seems that my kid brother has found he is in need for a good los angeles criminal defense lawyer and for some reason they were under the impression that we knew such a california criminal lawyer and at that late hour needed the name and number and quick like. It was most unfortunate for us all that we have no idea where they thought we had such a connection and wasn’t really in the mood to debate the subject but I did suggest that they call some of our other siblings to see if it was one of them that they were thinking of, as well as urging them to consider waiting just a few more hours to make those calls unless they wanted the entire family ticked off at them at receiving such late night calls for something that certainly could wait just a few more hours. And if they still couldn’t find what they were looking for to consider doing a simple Google search on the Internet to find someone that can do the job.

Tax Time Again

I am getting very anxious to find out how much of a tax refund we will be getting this year.  I finally bought the tax software that I always use each year since I started doing our own taxes and used it this afternoon. I couldn’t bear to continue dishing out hundreds of dollars for a professional to do the job when I can do it myself and 4 other family members taxes as well. So I  filled out everything based on the forms we have received so far.  I only need to wait for a few things from our bank and our two stock companies, but it looks like we will be getting all of our taxes back that we paid in and by using the Internet and direct deposit I’ll have the money in no time.

Work from Home

Contribution by Saul Martin

When I started my own business, I was fortunate to have a lot of great people around me to help. The entire process was pretty painless, as a matter of fact. I am working out of my house presently to save some money, so all I really needed to get started was a phone and internet connection—I decided to pony up and stop stealing my neighbor’s wireless once I realized I could write the internet off on my taxes as a business cost. Is that bad? In any event, I stumbled across smallbusiness.xo.com and was able to sign up for both things in one place. I can’t believe how easy it was to cross that stuff off my list. Once that was all taken care of, I moved on to the really important stuff—drumming up some business! I did that the old fashioned way, by picking up my new phone and calling people. It seems to be working; I’m getting in new clients weekly and things are definitely on their way up! I am looking forward to when I’m big enough to cross the office off my list, too! Working from home is getting a little cramped.

Butt dialing

Every now and then someone in my circle of friends and family butt dials me. My cell phone will ring and I’ll answer the phone, expecting to speak to the person at the other end of the line. Instead I hear background noise. I’ll say hello a couple of times, and when I realize that they can’t hear me sometimes I’ll even raise my voice a lot (if I’m home) to try to get their attention, but I’ve never been successful with that endeavor.

When that happens I’m never quite sure whether to be amused or annoyed. Not that being annoyed will help anything…..  Sometimes I’ll listen for a moment or two to see if I can hear the background conversation; after all I just might learn something that will prove useful down the road.

Stopping Collection Harassment California Style

Certainly my brother-in-law really didn’t think that his creditors wouldn’t be able to find him and catch up to him just because he took my kid sister and the boys all the way across the country into Southern California. I mean I know that they relocated there because his aging parents are in need of constant care from some one close in the family and it worked up that they were the lucky ones picked to do the job. They didn’t move there to escape their debt, but he is acting so surprised at the fact that it only took a few weeks and now they are getting tons of phone calls day and night from the companies that want their money from back east.

Good thing that they were told about the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act which enacted in 1978 and taken seriously in the state of California and they were told a number to call to an attorney that guarantees to stop collection harassment for good, he actually specializes in the stop collection harassment California business. He sports a 99% success rate, so there is something to be said about that type of record. Anyway, I’m glad that they called and lined up a free consultation to see what they can do to lessen the stress of these nerve racking phone calls. Relocating is stressful enough and hem with their three year old twin baby boys no less.
